Combining content extraction heuristics

2008

The main text content of an HTML document on the WWW is typically surrounded by additional contents, such as navigation menus, advertisements, link lists or design elements. Content Extraction (CE) is the task to identify and extract the main content. Ongoing research has spawned several CE heuristics of different quality. However, so far only the Crunch framework combines several heuristics to improve its overall CE performance. Since Crunch, though, many new algorithms have been formulated. The CombinE system is designed to test, evaluate and optimise combinations of CE heuristics. Its aim is to develop CE systems which yield better and more reliable extracts of the main content of a web …

Cómo abordar el desarrollo de una competencia transversal compleja mediante el alineamiento constructivo

2019

[EN] We present a model based on activities for the acquisition of essential competences of the scientific-technical qualifications, developed throughout the course of Cell Biology of the 1st year of the Degree in Biotechnology. For example, the search and analysis of bibliographic information and the design and interpretation of experiments are closely related and very important competences in the training of the biotechnologist, however they are not well contemplated in a specific way in the study plans. The proposed activities, designed under the premises of the constructive alignment of Biggs and Tang, develop these competences jointly and within the framework of a single subject.

Design characteristics, primary stability and risk of fracture of orthodontic mini-implants: Pilot scan electron microscope and mechanical studies

2013

Objectives: Orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs) are increasingly used in orthodontics but can fail for various reasons. This study investigates the effects of OMI design characteristics on the mechanical properties in artificial bone. Material and Methods: Twelve self-drilling OMIs (2 small, 6 medium, 4 large) from 8 manufacturers were tested for their primary stability in simulated medium-high cancellous bone and the risk to fracture in high-density methacrylate blocks. For the assessments of the maximum insertion torque (IT) and torsional fracture (TF) 5 of each OMI were used and for the pull-out strength (POS) 10. The OMIs were inserted with a torque screwdriver (12 sec/360°) until the bott…

A Newcomer's Guide to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems Community

2019

[EN] Welcome to EICS, the Engineering Interactive Computing Systems community, PACMHCI/EICS journal, and annual conference! In this short article, we introduce newcomers to the field and to our community with an overview of what EICS is and how it positions with respect to other venues in Human-Computer Interaction, such as CHI, UIST, and IUI, highlighting its legacy and paying homage to past scientific events from which EICS emerged. We also take this opportunity to enumerate and exemplify scientific contributions to the field of Engineering Interactive Computing Systems, which we hope to guide researchers and practitioners towards making their future PACMHCI/EICS submissions successful an…

L’altro architetto dei Cassina. Colin Glennie a casa di Adele

2020

Designing the UNESCO Buffer Zone.Una Call per la maggior protezione di Villa Adriana

2019

The International Design Call for the Great Villa Adriana “Designing the UNESCO Buffer Zone” – proposed last year by the Accademia Adrianea di Achitettura e Archeologia – involved numerous Schools of Architecture from all over Europe, organized in teams with famous architectural practices. The debate on fragile territories, of which the Tivoli area is a paradigm, has produced results of great quality and reliability, demonstrating that the multidisciplinary approach (which ranged from landscape design to museographic details) is currently the most correct one and making clear that the continuity of dialogue on this subject in the field of monumental heritage and landscape can be a useful st…

Disaster Risk Reduction for All? Understanding Intersectionality in Disaster Situations

2021

When designing digital services for citizens in a disaster situation, the diversity of its audience and their particular needs are not always sufficiently taken into account. Variables like digital equipment available, environment, disabilities, socio-economic status, etc., play a significant role in people’s ability to access and exchange important information through digital means. In this paper, we will examine some factors that lead to this inequality, and we see that they tend to boil down to a lack of awareness or focus on the diversity of the population, and this affects not only people with disabilities, but also other disadvantaged groups. More broadly, we will examine this in term…

Towards Successful Implementation of a Virtual Classroom for Vocational Higher Education in Indonesia

2019

The virtual classroom continues to grow, but it is becoming more and more the norm, and it is fundamentally different from the vocational students at the Indonesian university. With the promised benefits of the virtual classroom, many challenges and difficulties come in the implementation. Although there are already successful design principles for virtual classrooms that support organizations in overcoming the challenges, the approach to implementing the design principles of virtual classroom at the vocational higher education in Indonesia is still lacking. In this study, we aim to answer the research gap and used the design sciences research by interviewing the lecturers to design the sol…

Sociability in Virtual Reality

2021

This study investigates sociability in the context of immersive Virtual Reality (VR). A Design Science Research process was applied, and three iterative development versions of a VR application were studied. Sociability around the technology was investigated with two theoretical perspectives: social presence and social interactions. The results of qualitative interviews and observations as well as a quantitative experiment are combined to make a proposal for four design principles enhancing the beneficial sociability of VR systems. These principles address the importance of ease-of-use and personalization in the activation of a customer, customer empowerment and emancipation through familia…

From Heuristics to Humble Theories in Physics Education: The Case of Modelling Personal Appropriation of Thermodynamics in Naturalistic Settings

2014

This paper concerns the analysis of data collected during the implementation of a teaching proposal on thermodynamics in a class of 20 students (17 year-olds) of a scientifically-oriented secondary school in Italy. After a brief presentation of the teaching proposal design and of the notion of learning environment as properly complex territory, the results of two levels of analysis are discussed. The first level regards a phenomenological (bottom-up) analysis of a selection of individual interviews to students. The analysis allowed us: i) to reconstruct how different students approached the study of thermodynamics; ii) to show in what sense we can infer, in the words of Confrey, that the te…
